Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site MED PriorityIn 1787, a sudden violent storm caught the Manx herring fleet at sea, destroying multiple boats and killing many fishermen. This was one of IoM's worst maritime disasters β entire communities lost their breadwinners in a single night. The herring fishery was the backbone of the Manx economy at the time. Debris from multiple vessels scattered along the west coast. WHY DETECT HERE: 18th-century shipwreck material is highly collectible and often beautifully made. Georgian-era coins, brass navigational instruments, pewter vessels, copper fastenings. The west coast beaches from Peel to Kirk Michael are the most likely landfall for wreck debris. Storm erosion after westerly gales is your best friend.
