Andreas Church
Viking & Norse Heritage Site HIGH Priority
Andreas parish has the HIGHEST concentration of Viking-era carved crosses anywhere on the Isle of Man — the church houses magnificent Norse cross slabs showing scenes from Norse mythology (Odin, Sigurd, Loki). This proves Andreas was a MAJOR Norse settlement and power centre. The Ballacamaish Viking hoard was found nearby in 1870. WHY DETECT HERE: If the Vikings were wealthy enough to carve elaborate stone crosses and bury silver hoards here, this was a rich, powerful community. The surrounding farmland has been ploughed for centuries, bringing deeper artefacts to the surface. Norse, medieval, and post-medieval finds all likely. Get permission from any farmer within 2km of the church — the entire parish is Viking gold territory.
