Andreas Parish Farmland

Metal Detecting & Treasure Hunting Site HIGH Priority
IoM's VIKING HEARTLAND and the #1 farmland detecting area on the island. WHY: (1) HIGHEST CONCENTRATION of Norse carved crosses — these expensive stone carvings prove a wealthy, powerful community lived here. (2) BALLACAMAISH HOARD found here in 1870 (silver arm rings, neck rings). (3) FLAT PRODUCTIVE FARMLAND — ideal for detecting. Ploughing brings deep artefacts to the surface. (4) CONTINUOUS HABITATION — Viking, medieval, and post-medieval farming has used this land for 1,000+ years. Every ploughing season turns up fresh material. (5) MULTIPLE SETTLEMENT SITES — not just one farm, but an entire parish of Norse homesteads. HOW TO GET PERMISSION: Approach farmers directly — knock on farmhouse doors, explain what you're doing, offer to share finds or provide the farmer with anything valuable you discover. Most Manx farmers are friendly and interested. Respect the land: fill your holes, close gates, don't detect when ground is waterlogged.
