Ballahara Stones (St John's)
Neolithic Archaeological Site MED PriorityRelocated megalithic stones from a multi-chambered tomb (~2300 BC) discovered in the 1970s during sandpit works. The original tomb at Ballahara was badly damaged but excavated by archaeologist Sheila Cregreen. Four surviving stones were donated by the sandpit owners and erected near Tynwald Hill at St John's. WHY: The ORIGINAL Ballahara sandpit site still has archaeological potential β the excavation was a rescue dig and couldn't recover everything. The stones at St John's are a monument to lost heritage. The sandpit area near German church may retain material from the destroyed tomb.
