Ballaharra (Balladoole) Viking/Iron Age
Neolithic Archaeological Site MED Priority
One of IoM's MOST IMPORTANT archaeological sites — an Iron Age hillfort that was later reused for a spectacular Viking ship burial. Excavations revealed an iron-riveted boat with a female burial accompanied by grave goods (now in Manx Museum). The Iron Age enclosure predates the Viking use by centuries. The site overlooks Castletown Bay with commanding views. WHY DETECT HERE: Multi-period sites like this are the holy grail for detectorists. The hillfort proves sustained Iron Age occupation; the Viking ship burial proves wealthy Norse activity; and medieval farming continued afterward. The surrounding fields (NOT the monument itself) are the target. Focus on the approach routes to the hillfort — the trackways people used to reach it are where items were most commonly lost.
