Ballateare Viking Ship Burial
Viking & Norse Heritage Site HIGH Priority
One of the most important Viking burial sites in the British Isles. A 10th-century ship burial excavated by Gerhard Bersu in 1946, containing a male warrior buried with weapons, a shield, riding equipment, and a sacrificed young woman. WHY DETECT HERE: Viking burial grounds are surrounded by settlement areas. The fields adjacent to known burials are prime territory for domestic metalwork, tools, and trade items.
