Bradda Head (Bradda Mine)

Mineral Collecting & Geology Site MED Priority Bradda Head (Bradda Mine) - Mineral Collecting & Geology Site on the Isle of Man
Copper-lead mine above Port Erin with the distinctive Milner Tower (1871) landmark on the headland. The mine worked narrow veins in the Manx Group slates, producing both copper and lead ore. Old mine adits (horizontal tunnels) are visible on the hillside — DO NOT ENTER these as they are unstable. WHY COLLECT HERE: The combination of coastal scenery and mineral collecting makes this one of IoM's most enjoyable geology sites. Mine spoil heaps on the hillside contain chalcopyrite (copper ore — brassy yellow), galena (lead), malachite (green copper carbonate — very pretty), and quartz. Malachite staining on rocks is the easiest thing to spot — look for bright green patches. The walk from Port Erin is steep but rewards with spectacular views. Combine with beach detecting on Port Erin beach below.

What You Can Find Here
