Braddan Old Church
Norse & Medieval Heritage Site HIGH Priority
Ancient church on the outskirts of Douglas with remarkable collection of Norse cross slabs and ogham stones (Celtic script). Occupied from Early Christian period through Norse era to medieval. The church sits on elevated ground overlooking the Douglas valley β a strategic position chosen deliberately. WHY DETECT HERE: Multi-period site spanning 1,000+ years. The graveyard and church grounds are protected, but the surrounding fields and trackways leading to the church are fair game with permission. Early Christian monks, Norse settlers, and medieval villagers all used this site. Lost items from funeral processions, church gatherings, and daily life over a millennium.
What You Can Find Here
Early Christian metalwork, Norse cross fragments, medieval coins, buckles, religious items, funeral goods (buttons, pins)
