Castletown / Balladoole

Multi-period powerhouse: Castletown was IoM's CAPITAL for centuries, with Castle Rushen (one of Europe's best-preserved medieval castles) at its heart. Nearby Balladoole has an Iron Age hillfort overlaid by a Viking ship burial — one of only a handful known in the British Isles. The town was the seat of the Lords of Mann and later the seat of government until 1869.
