Iron Age & Norse Settlement MED Priority
Iron Age to Norse settlement site near Scarlett Point. Excavations revealed a sequence of occupation from the pre-Roman Iron Age through to the Viking period β over 1,000 years of continuous habitation. Round houses, hearths, and metalworking evidence found. WHY DETECT HERE: Proven multi-period occupation makes this area HIGH priority. The excavated site is protected, but the wider Scarlett area (including the nature reserve foreshore) produces material eroded from the site. The combination of settlement archaeology and Carboniferous limestone fossils makes Scarlett a double opportunity.
