Cranston Hamlet (Old Map: 'prominent' settlement)

Multi-Period Archaeological Site LOW Priority Cranston Hamlet (Old Map: 'prominent' settlement) - Multi-Period Archaeological Site on the Isle of Man
Durham's 1595 map shows 'Cranston' as a prominent settlement in the Lezayre area. Some hamlets shown on old maps have shrunk to a single farm or vanished entirely β€” these 'deserted medieval villages' are prime archaeological sites in England and could be on IoM too. WHY: Deserted or shrunken settlements preserve medieval and post-medieval material that hasn't been disturbed by later building. If Cranston was once a thriving hamlet but is now just a farm name, the surrounding fields contain the village's accumulated material.
