⛰️ Cronk ny Arrey Laa (1,449ft — Watch Hill of the Day)

Multi-Period Archaeological Site HIGH Priority ⛰️ Cronk ny Arrey Laa (1,449ft — Watch Hill of the Day) - Multi-Period Archaeological Site on the Isle of Man
The name translates as 'Hill of the Day Watch' or 'Hill of the Day's First Light' — this was an OFFICIAL LOOKOUT POINT. From the summit you can see the Irish coast clearly, and it's the first high point to catch dawn light in the south. This hill was part of IoM's BEACON/SIGNAL CHAIN — fires on hilltops communicated warnings across the island. The 1595 Durham map shows the island's high points as key landmarks. WHY: Official watch stations had PERMANENT STAFFING during times of conflict (Viking raids, Civil War, Napoleonic wars, WW2). Each period of conflict left material. The paths to the summit from Port Erin and Cregneash funnelled generations of watchmen. The grassy summit plateau is ideal for detecting — short turf, no ploughing, minimal modern disturbance.
