Iron Age & Norse Settlement MED Priority
Promontory fort overlooking Port St Mary bay. Multi-period site: Iron Age defensive enclosure later reused by Vikings. Excavations found Norse-era artefacts. The natural cliff-edge position controlled southern harbour approaches. WHY DETECT HERE: Cliff-edge erosion brings buried artefacts to surface on surrounding slopes. Fields immediately inland were the settlement area. Iron Age, Viking, and medieval activity all documented. The cliffs are actively eroding β new material appears every winter.
