☠️ Derbyhaven — Smuggling & Garrison Port
Multi-Period Archaeological Site HIGH PriorityDerbyhaven was IoM's original main harbour before Douglas grew. Used by the Lords of Mann (Stanley/Derby family) as their private port and later a centre of the IoM smuggling trade. The sheltered bay faces Ireland — perfect for smuggling runs. Also the site of the oldest golf course outside Scotland (1880s) and Ronaldsway prehistoric site is adjacent. WHY: Multiple layers of history in one bay: medieval port, Civil War landing (1651 — see Illiam Dhone below), 100+ years of smuggling, Georgian harbour works, Victorian golf. The harbour area and beach are detecting-rich. Derbyhaven's decline in favour of Douglas meant less modern disturbance — archaeological layers are better preserved than Douglas harbour.
