☠️ Douglas Harbour Old Quay — Smuggling Hub
Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority
Douglas grew from a fishing village to IoM's capital partly BECAUSE of the smuggling trade. The old quay area (around the swing bridge and inner harbour) handled enormous quantities of contraband goods in the 18th century. Merchants maintained warehouses full of tea, spirits, and tobacco at Manx duty rates. WHY: While much of old Douglas has been redeveloped, pockets survive — the area around the Quayside, Parade Street, and the old harbour walls. Low tide reveals the foreshore where items were lost from ships, wharves, and warehouses for centuries. Mudlarking (foreshore detecting) at Douglas harbour is productive for coins, clay pipes, and maritime items from the 1600s-1900s.
