Fort Anne, Douglas (Napoleonic Defences)

Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority Fort Anne, Douglas (Napoleonic Defences) - Multi-Period Archaeological Site on the Isle of Man
Fort Anne was built/upgraded during the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) to defend Douglas harbour from possible French invasion. IoM was strategically vital — controlling the Irish Sea shipping lanes. The fort was part of a wider coastal defence system including batteries at Castletown, Peel, and Ramsey. WHY: Napoleonic-era military sites produce distinctive items — George III copper coins, military buttons with regimental insignia, lead musket balls, uniform fittings. Fort Anne's garrison would have been stationed here for years during the French wars. The area around the fort (now partly developed) and the harbour approaches were military zones. Any undeveloped ground near the fort site is worth checking.
