German Church (Peel)
Medieval Heritage Site MED Priority
St Peter's Church on the hillside above Peel — known locally as the 'German Church' due to a burial of German WW1 internees from the Knockaloe Camp. Knockaloe was a MASSIVE internment camp during WW1 holding over 23,000 prisoners — one of the largest camps in the British Isles. WHY IT'S SIGNIFICANT: The Knockaloe camp site (nearby) has huge detecting potential. 23,000 internees over 4 years = enormous amounts of lost personal items, camp tokens, buttons, buckles. The camp fields are farmland now. A largely untapped detecting resource.
