Giant's Quoiting Stone (Port St Mary)
Neolithic Archaeological Site MED Priority
Standing stone (menhir) near Port St Mary — one of IoM's more impressive isolated standing stones. Whether this is a genuine prehistoric monument or a later farm feature is debated (see Billown research), but its size and prominent position suggest genuine antiquity. WHY: Isolated standing stones often mark burial sites ('flat graves' — burials without mounds). Geophysical surveys in other parts of Britain regularly find burials near standing stones. The field around this stone, with landowner permission, could reveal whether an associated burial exists. Even if it's a later rubbing stone, the field itself is in a rich archaeological landscape.
