Glen Wyllin Mesolithic Flint Scatter

Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority Glen Wyllin Mesolithic Flint Scatter - Multi-Period Archaeological Site on the Isle of Man
Sheltered glen near Kirk Michael where mesolithic and neolithic flint scatters have been found. Coastal glens with fresh water streams were favoured by IoM's earliest inhabitants — they provided shelter from wind, drinking water, and easy access to both marine and terrestrial food. WHY: Coastal glens are IoM's most consistent mesolithic sites. The stream-mouth beach areas where glens meet the sea are the TARGET — this is where hunter-gatherers made camp, processed fish, and knapped flint. After storms, check the eroding cliff face and beach for exposed material. Glen Wyllin is publicly accessible as a park.
