⚔️ Hango Hill — Execution Site of Illiam Dhone
Multi-Period Archaeological Site HIGH Priority
HISTORIC EXECUTION SITE. In January 1663, William Christian of Ronaldsway ('Illiam Dhone' — Manx for 'Brown-haired William') was executed here for his role in the 1651 Manx Rebellion against the Derby family. IoM was the LAST Royalist territory to surrender in the entire English Civil War — Countess Charlotte de la Tremoille (wife of the executed Earl of Derby) held Castle Rushen and Peel Castle until Colonel Duckenfield's parliamentary fleet arrived. Hango Hill was an ancient execution place (Norse: 'gallows hill'). WHY: The Norse + Civil War + execution connections make this a multi-period military/judicial site. The hill and surrounding fields have seen 1,000+ years of dark history. Illiam Dhone is a MANX NATIONAL HERO — his execution is commemorated every January 2nd. The fields around the hill were the gathering place for Manx militia (800 men) in 1651.
