HMS Racehorse (Langness)

Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site HIGH Priority HMS Racehorse (Langness) - Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site on the Isle of Man
Royal Navy vessel lost off the treacherous Langness peninsula. Its sinking, along with other losses here, was one of the key catalysts for Sir William Hillary (a Douglas resident) to campaign for the founding of the RNLI in 1824. Hillary witnessed ships being wrecked from his window and was appalled that there was no organised rescue service. WHY IT MATTERS: This is one of the most historically significant shipwreck locations in the British Isles — the disaster that helped CREATE the lifeboat service. The rocky intertidal zone at Langness holds debris from multiple wrecks spanning centuries. Low spring tides expose rock pools with trapped metalwork. Extreme care needed on the rocks — the same conditions that wrecked ships can catch walkers.
