️ Hutchinson Camp, Douglas (WW2 Artists' Camp)
Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority
The most culturally significant WW2 internment camp on IoM. Hutchinson Camp on the Douglas promenade housed intellectuals, artists, and musicians — including future art historians, composers, and scientists. They created the famous 'Hutchinson University' and mounted art exhibitions. The camp operated from July 1940 within requisitioned boarding houses on Hutchinson Square. WHY: While heavily developed now, the Hutchinson Square area and surrounding gardens may retain WW2 material. The cultural significance makes any finds especially valuable historically. The camp's proximity to Douglas seafront means foreshore detecting along the promenade could yield WW2-era items dropped by internees during supervised walks.
