Keeill Ballaqueeney (Rushen, with ogham)
Early Christian Keeill & Chapel HIGH Priority
Keeill in Rushen parish where OGHAM INSCRIPTIONS were found — proving Irish Celtic literacy and direct Irish connections in the far south of IoM. Ogham stones are exceptionally rare on IoM (only a handful known). WHY: Ogham stones indicate educated, literate Irish settlers or missionaries. These people came with possessions — metalwork, books (metal shrines), reliquaries. The area around ogham-bearing sites has consistently produced high-quality finds across the British Isles.
What You Can Find Here
Ogham stone fragments, Irish-style metalwork, cross fragments, early Christian items
