Langness Wreck Graveyard

Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site HIGH Priority Langness Wreck Graveyard - Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site on the Isle of Man
The rocky Langness peninsula juts into the Irish Sea south of Castletown, creating a natural hazard that has wrecked ships for centuries. The lighthouse was built in 1880 SPECIFICALLY because so many vessels were being lost here. Before GPS and modern navigation, ships approaching Castletown or Derbyhaven in poor visibility frequently struck the rocks. HMS Racehorse is the most famous loss, but dozens of others lie in these waters. WHY DETECT HERE: The intertidal zone at Langness is littered with debris from centuries of wrecks. At very low spring tides, rock pools are exposed that can contain trapped metalwork β€” copper bolts, iron fastenings, brass fittings. The beaches either side of the peninsula also catch wreck debris. SAFETY: These rocks are genuinely dangerous. Never detect alone, always check tide times, and keep an eye on the sea.
