Lonan Church
Celtic & Norse Heritage Site MED Priority
Parish church with early carved crosses and ogham stones (Celtic script), indicating BOTH Irish Celtic AND Norse heritage. Lonan sits in the eastern hills between Douglas and Laxey. WHY: The ogham stones prove a literate Celtic Christian community existed here before the Norse arrived. The Norse then adopted and continued using the site. Multi-cultural, multi-period activity in surrounding fields. The approach tracks to the church are promising detecting routes.
