Maughold Head Iron Age Fort
Iron Age Hillfort & Settlement MED Priority
Dramatic cliff-edge promontory fort on IoM's NE coast, overlooking the Irish Sea toward the Lake District. The defensive ramparts cut off the headland, creating a fortified enclosure. Similar to other British Iron Age cliff castles. WHY DETECT HERE: Cliff-edge forts erode constantly — material falls from the cliff face onto the foreshore below. After winter storms, check the foreshore for items exposed by cliff collapse. The fields inland from the rampart ditch are also worth detecting — the settlement extended beyond the fort walls. Combine with a visit to Maughold Church (40+ carved crosses) just inland.
