Maughold Monastery
Celtic & Norse Heritage Site HIGH Priority
Celtic monastery established in the 5th century, later absorbed into the Norse church. The churchyard contains IoM's LARGEST collection of early carved crosses β over 40 spanning Celtic, Norse, and medieval periods. Legend attributes the founding to St Maughold, a reformed Irish pirate saint. The monastic settlement extended far beyond the current churchyard into surrounding fields. WHY DETECT HERE: 1,500 years of continuous religious activity. Monks' workshops, pilgrims' hostels, and agricultural buildings once covered a much wider area. Fields within 500m of the church are target zones for Early Christian metalwork, Viking items, and medieval coins.
