MV Solway Harvester (2000)
Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site LOW PriorityFishing vessel tragedy — scallop dredger from the Isle of Whithorn (Scotland) that sank on 11 January 2000 approximately 11 miles off Douglas in 35 metres (115 feet) of water. All 7 crew were lost. HMS Sandown (Sandown-class minehunter) located the wreck during an extensive search and rescue operation. The disaster was attributed to the vessel becoming overwhelmed by heavy seas while loaded with scallops. WHY IT'S HERE: This is a PROTECTED SITE — absolutely no diving, detecting, or disturbance. It serves as a reminder that the Irish Sea around IoM remains dangerous and that maritime archaeology isn't just ancient curiosities. The tragedy is still deeply felt on the island 25+ years later, and the families of the lost fishermen are remembered annually. The site is treated with the same respect as a war grave.
