Niarbyl Formation (Niarbyl Bay)

Fossil Hunting Location HIGH Priority Niarbyl Formation (Niarbyl Bay) - Fossil Hunting Location on the Isle of Man
IoM's MOST IMPORTANT geological site and its best fossil-hunting location. The Niarbyl Formation is Silurian age (Wenlock epoch, ~430 million years old) — the youngest Palaeozoic rocks on IoM. This is where the famous IAPETUS SUTURE is visible — the line where two ancient continents (Avalonia and Laurentia) collided to close the Iapetus Ocean, eventually forming the British Isles. Graptolite fossils and acritarchs (microscopic marine organisms) are documented. WHY COLLECT HERE: Niarbyl is accessible, scenic, and scientifically world-class. The rock exposures are best seen at low tide. Look for graptolites — they appear as tiny silvery-white marks on dark slate surfaces, like writing (the name means 'written stone'). They look like small saw blades or feathers. The Iapetus Suture itself is marked by a change in rock type — look for the boundary between different coloured slates. The café at Niarbyl serves excellent food. This is an SSSI so don't hammer rocks — collect only from loose material.
