⛰️ North Barrule (1,842ft)
Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority
IoM's second-highest peak at 1,842ft. North Barrule has cairns and possible prehistoric features on its summit ridge. Like South Barrule, the name suggests it was a 'ward-fell' (watch/signal hill). The summit offers a commanding view of the northern plain — where the Viking hoards and densest settlement were. WHY: (1) Signal/beacon hills accumulate material from the people who maintained the beacons — fuel carriers, watchmen, soldiers, (2) The cairns on the ridge may be Bronze Age burial cairns — hilltop burials are common in Britain, (3) Paths to the summit from multiple directions concentrate foot traffic at the approaches, (4) The saddle between North Barrule and the Clagh Ouyr ridge is a natural pass — travellers have used it for millennia.
