Oatlands Granite

Mineral Collecting & Geology Site LOW Priority Oatlands Granite - Mineral Collecting & Geology Site on the Isle of Man
Granite pluton near Foxdale — this is the magmatic heat engine that drove the famous Foxdale silver-lead mineralisation. Where the granite intruded into the surrounding Manx Group sediments, hot mineral-rich fluids were injected into fractures, creating the silver-rich lead-zinc veins. The granite itself is a medium-grained rock with visible crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica. WHY COLLECT HERE: The contact zone around the granite margins is where you'll find the best mineral specimens — quartz veins, altered wall rock, and mineralised fractures. The granite also contains feldspar crystals that can be quite large (several cm). Not as productive as Foxdale mine dumps themselves, but an interesting geological site for understanding WHY the minerals are where they are. Best combined with a Foxdale mine visit.

What You Can Find Here
