Old Kirk Braddan Churchyard (Cross Collection)
Early Christian Keeill & Chapel MED Priority
The old churchyard at Kirk Braddan contains a SUPERB collection of carved Norse and Celtic crosses — some of the finest examples of Manx cross art. The Braddan crosses span the 5th-12th centuries, covering the transition from Celtic to Norse Christianity. WHY: Where significant cross collections survive, the church was a major community centre for centuries. The fields around Kirk Braddan — which sits above the Nunnery estate — were the parish heartland. The paths leading to this church carried centuries of foot traffic. Any available detecting ground near the old church is worth exploring.
