Onchan Church

Viking & Norse Heritage Site MED Priority Onchan Church - Viking & Norse Heritage Site on the Isle of Man
Onchan sits immediately north of Douglas — it was originally a separate village but has now merged with the capital. The church is ancient (Norse cross fragments) and the parish covers the hills above Douglas Bay. WHY DETECT HERE: The elevated farmland between Onchan and the coast offers views that early settlers prized. Norse and medieval items possible in ploughed fields. The advantage over Douglas is LESS modern disturbance — while Douglas expanded massively in the Victorian era, Onchan's farmland remained agricultural. Less modern clutter = cleaner detecting signals.
