Peel Castle Hinterland
Metal Detecting & Treasure Hunting Site HIGH Priority
The fields south and east of Peel Castle — IoM's Viking capital. WHY: (1) NORSE POWER CENTRE: Peel Castle was the seat of Viking power on the island. The fortress, cathedral, and Round Tower made this the most important settlement in Norse Mann. (2) RICH ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS: Excavations inside the castle found a spectacular Norse lady burial with glass and amber necklace. (3) TRADING PORT: Viking beach markets operated on the shore — traders from Ireland, Scotland, England, and Scandinavia exchanged goods. Every transaction risked dropping coins, weights, or goods. (4) NEVER SYSTEMATICALLY DETECTED: The fields stretching inland from the castle were the wider settlement — workshops, farms, housing. These fields are farmed but have never been professionally surveyed with detectors. (5) MULTI-PERIOD: Celtic monastery preceded the Norse, and medieval activity continued after. 1,500+ years of human activity.
