️ Peveril Camp, Peel (WW2 High-Risk Internees)
Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority
WW2 internment camp on Peel promenade — this was the HIGH-RISK camp, housing German and Austrian internees considered potentially dangerous. Around 800-900 men were held in requisitioned boarding houses on Marine Parade and Peveril Road. The camp operated from summer 1940 to April 1942. WHY: Unlike purpose-built camps, Peveril used existing buildings — meaning internees had more access to outdoor spaces. The gardens, allotments, and exercise areas around the Marine Parade / Peveril Road area accumulated dropped items. Peel's existing harbour and town also means medieval and smuggling-era material beneath the WW2 layer.
