Point of Ayre Lighthouse (IoM's northern tip)
Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED Priority
IoM's northernmost point — the tip of the island facing Scotland. Two lighthouses (1818 and 1890) and a foghorn station. This headland is also the terminus of the northern gravel ridge that's been depositing material from the sea for millennia. WHY: (1) Lighthouse keepers for 200+ years lost items around the buildings, (2) The gravel beach here is ACTIVELY GROWING — sea deposits new material constantly, (3) Shipwrecks around the Point are well documented, (4) The headland was a signal/lookout point in every military period, (5) Beach detecting here can produce items washed from offshore wrecks. After storms is the prime time.
