Port Erin Bay Wrecks
Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site MED Priority
Port Erin is a sheltered Victorian resort town in a beautiful south-facing bay. Despite the shelter, the bay has claimed several vessels over the centuries β the rocky headlands either side (Bradda Head and the Mull) are hazardous in poor visibility. The Marine Biological Station (Liverpool University) operated here from 1892-2006, and the bay was a popular anchorage for fishing fleets. WHY DETECT HERE: Victorian resort = 150+ years of tourists losing things on the beach. The beach is sandy and well-suited to detecting. Combine with a walk up to Bradda Head where old mine workings offer mineral collecting (copper, lead, malachite). Multiple hobbies in one trip.
