‍☠️ Ramsey Harbour — Smuggling & Maritime

Multi-Period Archaeological Site HIGH Priority ‍☠️ Ramsey Harbour — Smuggling & Maritime - Multi-Period Archaeological Site on the Isle of Man
IoM's second harbour after Douglas. Ramsey was a major smuggling port in the 18th century AND a Viking landing point (the name derives from Old Norse 'Ramsaa' — wild garlic river). The harbour has been in continuous use for over 1,000 years. Also the site of WW2 Mooragh internment camp adjacent. WHY: (1) 1,000+ years of harbour activity = enormous accumulation of lost items, (2) Smuggling era cargo handling, (3) Viking longship landing point, (4) Foreshore detecting at low tide, (5) The old quay area and harbour walls have medieval foundations. Ramsey's smaller size vs Douglas means less modern redevelopment and better preservation of older layers.
