Scarlett Point (Scarlett Stacks)
Fossil Hunting Location MED Priority
Nature reserve on the coast south of Castletown, combining Carboniferous Limestone and volcanic rocks (the only volcanic rocks on IoM). The limestone formed in a shallow tropical sea; the volcanic rocks record eruptions on the seafloor. Sea stacks and wave-cut platforms provide excellent rock exposures at low tide. WHY COLLECT HERE: (1) FOSSILS: The limestone beds contain crinoid stems, brachiopods, and corals — the same marine fauna as Turkeyland but in coastal exposures. Loose blocks on the beach often have fossil cross-sections visible. (2) VOLCANIC ROCKS: The dark volcanic rocks (basalt) contrast dramatically with the pale limestone — you can literally see ancient eruptions preserved in the rock record. (3) NATURE RESERVE: The area is rich in wildlife too — look for choughs (rare crow-like birds with red beaks) and seabirds. This is a nature reserve so collect only from loose material, don't hammer in-situ rock.
