Shellagh Point (Old Map: 'prominent headland')
Multi-Period Archaeological Site MED PriorityDurham's 1595 map shows Shellag Point as a 'prominent headland' — important enough to be named on the very first map. Headlands are natural navigation markers for sailors AND natural defensive positions. WHY: (1) Named headlands on the oldest maps were SIGNIFICANT in their era — fishermen, traders, and naval vessels used them for navigation, (2) Headlands attract shipwrecks (vessels misjudge currents), (3) Coastal headlands were used as lookout points in every period, (4) The Point of Ayre area (nearby) has extensive beaches for detecting.
