Silverburn Valley
Medieval Heritage Site MED Priority
Picturesque river valley running from Foxdale (mines) to Castletown (harbour). The Silverburn was IoM's main transport route for centuries — ore from the mines was carried down to Castletown for shipping. Medieval mills, farms, and settlements lined the river. The Monks Bridge (medieval packhorse bridge) crosses the river near Ballasalla. WHY DETECT HERE: River valleys are natural corridors of human activity. The combination of mining transport, medieval agriculture, and monastic influence (Rushen Abbey sits in this valley) creates extraordinary multi-period potential. Riverside fields and crossing points are highest priority.
