Snaefell Mine
Mineral Collecting & Geology Site MED Priority
High-altitude lead-zinc mine on the flanks of Snaefell — IoM's highest mountain (621m). Like Laxey, the mine veins contain unusually HIGH URANIUM content in solid hydrocarbons, making these ores scientifically unique. The mine operated at altitude where weather is harsh, so visits are best in summer. The spoil heaps are less visited than Laxey or Foxdale — fewer mineral collectors make the climb. WHY COLLECT HERE: The remoteness is the advantage — these dumps are less picked over than the accessible lowland mines. The walk up provides stunning views across the island. The Snaefell Mountain Railway runs to the summit (summer only), though the mine is below the summit on the eastern flanks near the old mine track. Material includes galena, sphalerite, pyrite, quartz, and the unusual uranium-bearing specimens.
What You Can Find Here
