South Barrule Iron Age Hillfort
Neolithic Archaeological Site MED Priority
MASSIVE Iron Age hillfort on South Barrule summit (483m) — IoM's second-highest peak. Contains the remains of 70+ hut circles, making it the LARGEST Iron Age settlement on the island. At its peak, this was a fortified hilltop town housing hundreds of people. The defensive ramparts are still clearly visible. WHY DETECT HERE: The summit area is the monument (Scheduled), but the APPROACHES and lower slopes are where the action is. People climbing to a hilltop settlement drop things on the way — the paths leading up from all directions are excellent detecting prospects. Also, satellite settlements existed on the lower slopes to serve the hilltop community. These smaller sites are poorly documented and potentially very productive. The walk up is steep but the views from the top are the best on the island.
What You Can Find Here
Iron Age pottery, spindle whorls, iron tools, bronze pins, quernstone fragments, stone tools, medieval items on lower slopes
