The Braaid
Celtic & Norse Heritage Site MED Priority
One of the BEST-PRESERVED Norse farmstead sites in the British Isles. Three buildings survive: a Celtic roundhouse, a Norse longhouse, and a Norse square house — showing the direct TRANSITION from Celtic to Norse culture. This is textbook archaeology visible on the ground. WHY DETECT HERE: The visible buildings are protected, but surrounding farmland was the wider settlement. Norse farmsteads were self-sufficient with smithing, weaving, food processing — all activities generating detectable debris. Fields within 500m of the ruins, with farmer permission, are the target.
