Tynwald Hill
Norse & Medieval Heritage Site HIGH Priority
The oldest continuous parliament in the world — Viking assembly since 979 AD (possibly earlier). Every year for over 1,000 years, crowds gathered here for laws, trade, and celebration. Major fairs were held alongside parliamentary sessions, with merchants, farmers, and travellers converging from across the island. WHY DETECT HERE: Imagine 1,000+ annual gatherings, each with hundreds of people buying, selling, eating, drinking — and LOSING things. Coins from every era, pilgrim badges, belt buckles, fair tokens, jewellery, buttons. The adjacent fields (not the protected Tynwald site itself) have seen only sporadic detecting. One detectorist could work these fields for years and keep finding new material. Focus on the flat fields within 500m of the hill — that's where the crowds spilled out.
