Victorian Railway Routes (IoM Steam Railway & MER)
Multi-Period Archaeological Site LOW Priority
VICTORIAN DATA: The IoM Steam Railway (1873) and Manx Electric Railway (1893) brought mass tourism. Station sites, halts, and picnic spots along the routes are marked on Victorian maps. Thousands of passengers used these routes for over 130 years. WHY: Railway stations and waiting areas concentrate human activity β people rummaging for tickets, waiting with loose change. Old station sites, especially closed ones (several lines have been shortened), are productive. The disused portion between Port Erin and Castletown, and the Foxdale branch line (closed 1943), are excellent targets.
