Viking Longship Wreck (AD 1228)
Historic Shipwreck & Dive Site HIGH Priority
Documented in Adrian Corkill's comprehensive shipwreck database — a Viking longship lost in AD 1228, nearly 800 years ago. This is one of the oldest documented wrecks in Manx waters. The Kingdom of the Isles was a Norse-ruled maritime state and longships were the backbone of its naval power. Exact position uncertain but recorded in Irish Sea off IoM's west coast. WHY IT MATTERS: A genuine Viking longship wreck would be one of the most significant maritime archaeological finds in the world — comparable to the Roskilde ships in Denmark. The reality is it's likely deeply buried in seabed sediment and may never be found, but the mere fact it's documented shows how rich these waters are.
