Whipping Stone (Onchan Churchyard)

Neolithic Archaeological Site LOW Priority Whipping Stone (Onchan Churchyard) - Neolithic Archaeological Site on the Isle of Man
Large wedge-shaped stone incorporated into St Peter's churchyard wall in Onchan. Local legend claims it was a whipping post, but it is almost certainly a PREHISTORIC standing stone — possibly from a stone circle or burial marker predating the church by millennia. WHY: Prehistoric stones reused in later structures are common across Britain. This stone's incorporation into a Christian churchyard wall is a classic example of a pagan monument being 'Christianised' by association. The church sits on an ancient site — the original standing stone location may have been a ritual or burial site. Onchan churchyard itself may overlay prehistoric features.
